- How to Measure the Thumb Turn Euro Cylinders?
When measuring a Euro-profile thumbturn cylinder, simply measuring the total length is insufficient—in fact, doing so is incorrect. You must also measure the horizontal distances from the center of the fixing screw to each end of the cylinder to ensure accuracy and avoid costly errors in batch orders. This information is particularly useful for cylinder wholesalers, so let’s look at the correct measurement method.
When measuring a Euro-profile cylinder, the lengths of the various sections can be represented by the letters A, B, and C. The distance from the keyhole side to the center of the fixing screw hole is designated as distance A; the distance from the thumbturn end to the center of the fixing screw is distance B; and the distance from the thumbturn end to the keyhole side is distance C (the total length).

We will use a 70mm thumb turn euro cylinder as an example for this demonstration. These measurement methods will help provide a better understanding of thumbturn Euro-profile cylinders:
- Step 1: Locate the central screw hole; the mounting screw must pass through this hole.
- Step 2: Use a tape measure or ruler to measure distance A and note the value (e.g., 35 mm).
- Step 3: Use a tape measure or ruler to measure distance B horizontally (e.g., 35 mm).
- Step 4: Measure the total length, C.
Ideally, the sum of distances A and B should equal the total length C. You must specify which side the keyhole or thumb-turn is on; typically, A faces the interior of the house, while B faces the hallway or exterior. If you have a 35/35 cylinder, the total length is 70 mm, and the orientation is less critical. However, with a 30/40 cylinder—which also has a total length of 70 mm—the cylinder will not fit correctly if the orientation is wrong. Therefore, when contacting the manufacturer, you must specify the thumb-turn position and the measurements for both sides.
Important Note: Do not include the length of the thumb-turn itself when measuring the cylinder; doing so will result in an incorrect length measurement.
Tools you may need for measure distance:
- Screwdriver
- Ruler or Tape Measure

FAQ
A thumb-turn Euro cylinder is primarily suitable for interior privacy doors, such as those for bedrooms and bathrooms. It features a keyhole on one side—intended for the exterior—allowing the door to be locked or unlocked with a mechanical key for security. The other side is equipped with a thumb turn, enabling easy operation from inside the room.
Improper installation can compromise safety. This lock should not be used on doors located near glass windows or doors equipped with peepholes; if a thumb-turn Euro cylinder is installed on such a door, an intruder could easily use a tool to operate the thumb-turn and gain entry to your home.
